I'm curious to know if you can purchase hardware firewalls for use with dialup modems (and if so some info/links please).

Where I live we have virtually no access to cable or DSL/ADSL and I have no choice but to use dialup.

I'd rather not setup an old PC as a firewall - I'd prefer an off the shelf "black box" that sits between my PC and the modem (or replaces the modem altogether).

Why would you want this? Since the modem has to be connected directly to your system, either through PCI slot or serial port, a software firewall would do just as well. It's not like the firewall is on a network where you could filter off trouble before it reaches your system, it's already there (I think).

What is an interesting question is, does such a modem/firewall exist? I know there are some routers that support dialup as a backup when your DSL goes down, but would it be feasible to use one?

I already use Norton Internet Security 2002, but, why use software when you can do it in hardware, and why let the threat into the PC when you can deal with it outside the pc? That's my reasons for wanting a hardware firewall.

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.
