hardware and airports

I've got to get my new rig (see sig) from Massachusetts (not out of Logan, thankfully) to Washington (state) for a 1-month stay near Seattle and I don't want to take any chances. I'm calling up the airport tomorrow morning to see what my options are, I'd like to avoid spending $200 for insured UPS and the safest options I see are to take out critical components and carry on, but I don't want to freak anyone out after what happened in the last year.

questions/comments? also...with the new stronger x-rays, is that a threat to recent hard drives at all? are these questions silly? 🙂

thanks! btw I fly out Tuesday afternoon

edit: forgot to mention, the last two years my best friend brought his out for 1 month stays and both trips were just fine... but this is all NEW stuff so I don't want to take too much of a chance... ahh, college summers 😉 gotta live em while ya can. oh yeah, and my friend has a 17" mon I can use so...it is just the base/peripherals.

You aren't going to carry anything on an airplane that has any metal content at all other than loose change and keys. They even took my P-38 C-ration can opener away from me. I doubt if they will let you take it as checked baggage. It will probably have to be shipped by either the package services(UPS,FedEx) or air freight. A laptop is a different matter. You better leave for the airport plenty early and be prepared to leave your box behind.

leaving it isn't an option 🙂 thanks for the quick response. I'll find my local UPS center and ship it as early as I can tomorrow. I wouldn't be taking it as carry on, too bulky... big suitcase in clothes but even that I'm too worried about.

UPS rates :-/

UPS Next Day Air®
Guaranteed by 12:00 Noon -- Next Day Total Rate (USD) 98.40*

UPS Next Day Air Saver®
Guaranteed by Next Day Total Rate (USD) 90.34*

UPS 2nd Day Air®
Guaranteed by End of Day -- 2 Days Total Rate (USD) 69.94*

UPS 3 Day Select®

guess this reinforces the fact that I need a laptop these days. coding (all sorts) & video editing on top of gaming...

the sad thing? my round trip ticket costs me less than shipping this will. guess I can't complain...just agitating.
