Hardware Acceleration causing 100% CPU usage.

Alright. I've gotten to the point where I'm getting REALLY pissed off at this, so apologies in advance if I sound testy.

Anyway, here's the story. I have this aging Radeon 9200 graphics card. So I decided to go buy a 9800 Pro. It was on sale, so why not, right?

Well, I install it. You know the drill. Remove old graphics drivers, uninstall old card, install new card, install drivers from the disc. Update drivers from the internet.

But now my CPU usage is 100%. Constantly. Everything is slowed to a crawl. Task Manager says Aston is taking up 100% of the CPU. Ok, kill it, switch back to explorer. Now Explorer is said to be using 100% of the CPU. Ok, so kill it. When no shell is active, Task Manager itself is said to be using 100%. So obviously something is messed.

Ok remove this 9800 Pro. Remove drivers. Boot into safe mode after doing so and use driver cleaner pro. Reinstall the 9200. Install drivers and BOOM. SAME DEAL. 100% CPU usage.

I went into the graphics card's settings and turned off hardware acceleration. Now everything is peachy again. Although with no hardware accel, I can't play any games or do anything else that requires it.

I can't find anything about this on ATI's website or from a google search. ATI wants me to register this product with them or something before they'll even let me phone them, so that's out of the question.

Anyone have any clue what the heck is going on, and can suggest a fix that doesn't involve a format? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm at wit's end here after screwing around with it for the last number of hours.

Maybe try reinstalling chipset drivers. Also try reinstalling direct x might help.

sounds like you don't wanna do a format, but to avoid raising your blood pressure anymore, just do a format...formatting cures everything, majority of the time.
