hardrive isn't getting recognized by computer, help :(

I have a maxtor 30 gig hard drive, it's been whining for a while (this really high pitched noise) but I've put up with that. Today I installed a game and I restarted, and when it restarted, it kept saying system failure, please insert boot disk or something of taht sort.

I booted up using the windows cd and then it stated that it can't find my hard drive, so I checked the wires and all of them are in tight and I'm wondering if anyone knows what's wrong with the hd, or is it finito?
