Radeons historically respond better to engine overclocking while leaving little margin to play with memory speed.
Tahiti is no exception and it really does need to be cranked up some over stock to really make it shine.
This is very true, compared to Kepler, boosting Tahiti VRAM speeds has less impact. Though the 7950 responds better to VRAM overclocking because its VRAM is clocked lower to begin with. So if you overclock a 7950 and 7970 to 1550 VRAM the 7950 gets a 300 MHz boost while 7970 is only getting 100 MHz.
