[hardocp] 4 Weeks with Radeon R9 290X CrossFire

Thanks for that reply. I too had good experience with it as a 290x when gaming. Unfortunately, it had issues when mining. Are yours mining/DC stable?
I guess they have to be babied a little.

I have 2 different AMD cards and am testing a weekend of mining but they are extremely touchy. Both had errors but I got it down to one card having errors and the other working at 10% of it's potential (likely due to errors).

My sapphire R9 290 bf4 ed. runs great --- it runs hot / great heater (94* playing BF3, idles at 48*) and you can definitely hear the fan, but it's not an obnoxious sound. Of course, my opinion re: sound is subjective and I realize there are people that can't stand the rustling of a paper bag or crunching on a potato chip. If you are that type of person, look elsewhere b/c you will not be happy w/ this card even if it provided you 1000 fps in your favorite games.

H gains points because it is transparent and open about what happens in the industry.
It is not about blasting or not blasting something. It is about the way it is blasted.
None will take you seriously if you will run in circles yelling "Yet engine, yet engine!" every time hawaii is mentioned.

Total BS. Do a search on the history between HOCP and Nvidia. HOCP is the farthest thing from "..transparent and open.."!

I have been on QuadFire (4) 290x for 4-5 weeks and I can say that the 290x is an awsome and fast card.

BUT

So many bugs in so many games, vsync is broken with QuadFire. Basically, we need better drivers. There was one WHQL for the 290x that was never officially released. And I've been running on 13.11 beta 9.4 for almost 2 weeks.

And now, Battlefield 4 is so broken that I don't see AMD releasing Mantle right now because BF4 is suppose to be the first game with mantle implemented into it.

We need better drivers, I'm waiting for 13.12 betas or WHQL. Or next will be 14.01 (January 2014 is coming)

Yea battlefield 4 is pretty messed up cant go throughout a play session without alot of freezing or lockups, irritating as hell.

I don't have any trouble, but my little brother crashes three times an hour.

What's hilarious is he's been playing on my computer. So I'm not sure what he's doing different than I am.

It's probably related to the game modes and servers you frequent. What a mess this game is

really, I have no trouble with bf4.

Same here. Played BF4 for 3 hours last night. I have my fan uncapped with a max temp of 78c. Fan doesn't go over 51%. No worse than my Reference 7970 really. My 290 idles at 40c.

Hate to be off topic.

But BF4 has only been getting better for me.

At the beginning I had all the crash issues and rubber banding problems. But as updates by dice rolled out both server and client based the game got better.

I barely crash now and I would say I enjoy the game. Heck BF3 on the Xbox crashes more than bf4 on PC for me.

The same experience here. They should have waited 4 weeks to release the game. Still i had 1 disconnect after one game ended today. And perhaps 2-3 small momentary sound bugs in game. For 4 hours. Thats fine for me in a complex new game.

For anyone wondering when to jump onboard now its ready imho. The levolution is stellar and the huge waves at the water is impressive and fun.

I think the dynamics in the gameplay is a huge step up from bf3. But my kd ratio is worse than awfull. Lol.

Sounds legit..third degree burns from a GPU

Also, apparently, 290X CF is incompatible with X58 chipset motherboards? Apparently, nobody can get it to work properly.

The quote you bold'd does't say anything about 3rd degree burns. Just burns. Stop being a agenda driven troll.

Yall take this stuff really seriously, all angry and stuff 🙂

I advised my brother to get a 290, but now the pricing is terrible (in the US). It seems this isn't AMD's fault. We would have preferred to get the aftermarket ones, as we don't like loud/hot cards.

Because the pricing/availability is bananas, he's now getting a 780 4GB OC edition for 280 3GB pricing.

Miners have really screwed over the AMD gamer segment right now unless mining is your bag. Cheapest 290 on newegg is $499 🙁

Ah well, on the positives, his ancient CF 6950s that I gave him sold for more than the 770 4GB OC cost him, lol. He's going to add another 770 4GB in a few weeks. The single 770 should help already though even if the gains aren't gigantic. His CF setup runs a 1440p screen, and at 2GB they aren't really ideal. It's a bit choppy.

I think smaller retailers don't gouge like the egg. If you can find it in stock.

Btw it's a 770 4 GB too, not 780 (unless you meant 3GB).
