Ok, please bear with me, this takes a bit of a story.....please read carefully. I posted this in a few forums because it might be different problems.

I recently moved, and changed DSL providers from Verzion to SBC Pac Bell. I had DSL speeds of 1500/128 at my old house. The DSL has been set up at my new place for about a week now, with a 1500 down/256 up line. I am using a new Arescom modem. With my WinXP Pro machine, I am getting speeds of 128 down/250 up. With another XP Pro machine, same scores. With a Windows 2k machine, same scores. It does not matter if I use my router or go straight into the computer, same scores. SBC has been out to check the line, which is in perfect shape. With the tech's Win98 laptop, on the SAME web test sites, with the SAME Arescom modem, he gets 1.3 Mbps. I pulled out my old Toshiba 133MMX laptop, and I get a similiar 1.3 or 1.4. I am completely and totally confused. Please note that I have SP1 loaded on both XP machines, and I have tried both onboard and PCI network cards. Does anyone have any ideas????? I'm at a loss to explain it.

UPDATE: With the DSL Arescom Modem plugged into the router, my WinXP Pro machine still shows 90-120 speeds, while the old Toshiba Win98 laptop shows 1.2Mbps!!!!!

Firewall, network, proxy, or QoS Packet Scheduler in WinXP could be culprits.

In fact, the Win2K network stack is much better than Win98's, so it's third party software, or could be the network cable if it was different one. :)

I had the EXACT same problem in Seattle w/ AT&T. I ended up having to use shielded cat 5. What difference this makes, I have no idea but it worked(s).
Good Luck!

humm that is a very odd problem indeed. I mean if you tried two different computers with Windows XP and 2K it is unlikely to be the computer hardware, the operating system configuration or the network cards. The line, modem, router and cable should all be good as well since it works on SBC's computer and your old laptop. Maybe a fresh install of XP on one of the machines without installing any updates or SP1 might do the trick? worth a shot anyways. Can't think of anything else it could be really

Are you using the phone cord supplied with the modem? It shouldn't be longer. Maybe it's the receive window? Try increasing it. Here is a tester. Here is a guide.;) Have a blast!

Arescom - ouch! I had one of their ISDN TA's a long time ago and I swear they make the most horrible unsupported products I've ever seen. The horror!

I'm glad you are having some luck now!
