Contra was awesome, but not really that hard. When I was little I played it so much I could beat it without dying. I still remember the levels well enough I can make it through most of the time without the Konami code.

Anyone remember a shooter called Zanac? Difficult as hell, it actually would throw more/harder enemies at you if you got too many power-ups, a sort of primitive AI back in the day.

wow, i found Bionic Commando and Contra to be easy as heck. I can beat Contra without taking a hit. Hell, I even beat Shattered Soldier on the hardest level.

Mike Tyson can be beat easily. My brother used to beat him all the time. basically, move left and right for the first 1:30 minutes... so that one hit doesnt knock you down

also, zelda II and castlevania? cmon.. they werent that bad.. i can see the grim reaper giving some problems, but thats about it. tmnt was a piece of cake and so was top gun.. yes, i was perfect on that one lol. beat more 250 nintendo games when I was a kid 🙂

the hardest ones i came across were:
sector z
thundercade
ghost n goblins

Mike Tyson's Punch Out was a piece of cake. I was in 2nd grade when I got it and I could destroy Tyson every time. The kids I went to school with were amazed!

Now, Ghosts and Goblins...that game is borderline impossible. Easily my #1 pick for hardest NES game.

Battletoads made me want to gouge my eyes.

I also recall The Adventures of Bayou Billy being impossible, but doubt many people played it. 😛

I played Bayau Billy or whatever a few times. I don't really remember it except that I think I kept losing on the first stage.

From the article on Mike Tyson: "He cannot be beat. Nintendo even said so."

What kind of crappy reporting is that? Yes he can be beat, I've seen it done. What a load of crap.

Read the article again dipshit, it's all one long joke.

The act of throwing one's controller was first documented in 1987 by a young player from Omaha, who happened upon a toothy Mike Tyson for the first time in "Punch-Out." True story. Sure, the game tricks you into thinking you can become the world's heavyweight champion early on, with beatable wussies like Glass Joe and Don Flamingo. But once you get to the final fight with Mike Tyson, your dreams will be shattered. He cannot be beat. Nintendo even said so.

Do you really think they documented the first controller throw? It's a humor column, and you didn't get it.

Did you hear the one about the airplane? Ah forget it, it's over your head.
Maybe the one about the ocean? Nevermind, it's too deep for you.

I can TKO him in the first round. When I was a kid I could TKO him in the second round easy.

What is up with the guy's voice in this play through?

Ghost n Goblin play through

There's something up with that playthrough (I admit I only watched till the first boss; I'll watch the rest later).

1) There was no "shuriken" when I played this as a kid. That I'm sure of.

2) The demon took less hits to kill and had a much easier flight pattern.

Maybe an easier version was released later on.

That would be #1 on my list, that's the only game I've ever owned on any platform that I didn't beat.

Gave the last boss over 100 tries, killed both of his goons a couple of times, got his vest off, but that was about it.

I'm pretty sure any of the ninja gaidens were more difficult than anything on the list

There was one that we simply could not beat the boss of. We tried after school every day for like two months.

I don't remember Bionic Commando or Battletoads, but the other 3 didn't seem so bad..

Ok, they kindof had a point with Contra minus "the code", but me & my friends all ended up beating MT Punch out.. I recall having a harder time with Bald Bull than Tyson.

THe only one that fits is Battletoads. I've gone through Contra only dying once, before (god damn hook stage :|)

Bionic Commando was certainly hard, but I'd say the hardest part was the final boss--timing that damn swing and missile to hit that one spot. ridiculous.

Without Ghosts and Goblins, of course, this list is worthless.

Ahhhh I didn't think Contra was that tough even without the code, Contra 2 maybe. Bionic Commando was hard, I always was terrible at punchout. What about the original Metal Gear, Blaster Master, Castlevania, Karnov, Rygar to name a few that were very tough. I guess you could probably have a whole list of games also that were so bad that they were almost impossible to complete.

Contra was easy as pie. Tyson's Punch Out wasn't too bad either. Mega Man 3 was pretty hard.

Now Contra Shattered Soldier was really hard.

Castlevania....sigh, never could get past the damn medusa heads in stage 2, iirc 🙁 fuck those jumps!

reminds me of the first TMNT. god damn ONE jump in that GD sewer :| 😛

as for paperboy...I don't remember any reason to play it very long to see if it was actually hard.

I always thought Mega Man 1 & 2 were harder than 3.

Contra was easy, there were a few times I beat it without dying once. Also beat Tyson's Punch Out. TMNT, BattleToads, Castlevania, Milon's Secret Castle, Blaster Master, and Ninja Gaiden were all MUCH tougher, and I put plenty of time into all those games and never beat them. Played Ghosts 'n Goblins only a few times, but I could see that being harder than all the rest.

Until you've gotten to the actual castle, you haven't seen ANYTHING yet. It's actually ok up until you get to the second to the last stage. Then BAM, you'll be stopped dead in your tracks....for a loooooong time. And once you beat the final stage, you're in for a little surprise. I threw my controller the first time and vowed never to play it again. Then after a few months of being pissed, I came back with a vengeance, determined to beat it. And after playing it for hours, I finally beat it....and never played it again.

SHENS!!!!!

no way anyone has ever beaten G&G; let alone made it past the 2nd stage. 😛
