True, but the lyric poem itself is childish and uncreative. And the meter (or verse riff) is terrible and overly strict. Have you never noticed that almost every line is either 5 or 10 syllables long? In classic Metallica fashion, they came up with the guitar intro first and then built the whole song around that with a flat tune and a military beat, and Hetfield is a crappy poet/lyricist (if you'll pardon me).

End of passion play, crumbling away7
I'm your source of self-destruction
Veins that pump with fear, sucking darkest clear
Leading on your death's construction

[Chorus:]
Taste me you will see
more is all you need
you're dedicated to
how I'm killing you

Come crawling faster
obey your Master
your life burns faster
obey your Master
Master

Master of Puppets I'm pulling your strings
twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, `cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, `cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
[End Chorus]

Needlework the way, never you betray
life of death becoming clearer
Pain monopoly, ritual misery
chop your breakfast on a mirror

[Chorus]

Master, Master, Where's the dreams that I've been after?
Master, Master, You promised only lies
Laughter, Laughter, All I hear and see is laughter
Laughter, Laughter, laughing at my cries

Hell is worth all that, natural habitat
just a rhyme without a reason
Neverending maze, drift on numbered days
now your life is out of season
I agree with you from an adult viewpoint, but being someone that was actually a fan, you should be able to put it all into perspective. Metallica's lyrics are very creative and meaningful when you take into account most other thrash metal bands' lyrics of the time.........

I dunno. Yes, that's the way Metallica builds songs, but they do it so well... There's just nothing that compares to them, if you're a huge fan of that style of music.

I dunno about Hetfield being a crappy lyricist.. I mean I guess it's all realitive. For that strict style of metal, who is better?

Please don't say Mustaine. :p

Slipknot - (SIC)
Slipknot - Me Inside

( you need good bass to appreciate each, as Slipknot is the king of the double bass pedal)

It must mean the latter, because I can play Master of Puppets just fine, but I've never been able to tackle Slayer's "War Ensemble" intro.

I agree. REALLY tough.

Not really an "into riff", but IMO the best metal intro is Megadeth's "Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?"

If there's a new way,
I'll be the first in line,
But it better work this time...

:)

that's a good one.

And it definitely has an incredible sound to it as well. If you're into music theory and you pick it apart, you can see where they change scales and uses unique resolutions to put real depth into it, instead of wailing away power chords like everyone does today. Its really an amazing piece of work.

too bad the lyrics are straight out of a retarded 12 year old's diary and the verse riff is terrible. the middle of the song is great, though. everything from the quiet breakdown right up to the start of the fast solo is good stuff. then hammet comes back in with his soul-less wanking and spoils the fun.

when i used to take guitar lessons, the teacher would put together "bands" of his students for recitals. one year my group did master of puppets and no one had any trouble with it. with the exception of the speed-picking, it's really not that hard.

Hey, "Stairway to Heaven" had far more retarded/cheesy lyrics, and no one seemed to complain about that. :)

I understand that its not the epitome of technical skill on guitar, but its definitely a step-up from what I'm used to seeing in music, metal in particular. And all the really impressive technical stuff isn't the kind of thing most people will listen to while just chilling... I mean, how many people do you know who can throw Steve Vai or Al Di Meola into their car's CD player?

As for it not being hard... maybe speed picking is just my weakness, but I could never get it up to full tilt with all downstrokes. The best I've done is about 190, then I stopped working on that riff for awhile and when I went back to it, I was back down to 170. Decided it wasn't worth the effort when few songs are played that fast and I've alternate picked it ever since.

Ah, the hardest intro riff I'd have to say is the intro solo to:
Shadows Fall - Mystery of One Spirit

I didn't think the intro riff to MoP was that difficult. Although, if you're going by tabs made by people listening by ear, they may be incorrect and harder to play than the official tablature.

As you say it's not metal, but one of the most distinctive and IMO Kick A$$ intros.

Actually, since we're on the topic of guitar playing, I need help on playing Pinched Harmonics. I've seen tutorials online on how to play them, but the wording or examples don't convey much to me. Maybe someone can word it better for my understanding. Please, reply or PM me.

You have to pluck the string with the pick, but modify your grip so that the end of the pick is barely above your thumb. After the pluck, tap the string with your thumb as gently as possible, and if you hit it dead-on, you'll get a harmonic. You have to know exactly where the spot is, though, or you'll just get a muffled note.

Edit: Oh yeah, and you are, of course, plucking 12 frets below the note you're holding, like a normal fretted harmonic.
