Hello all...

I currently have a slaved 20 GB maxtor drive on my comp and used to have win98 running on my master 30gb quantum fireball. However, my fireball burned out :( and I had to send it back.

Now as I await my 30GB to return I'm using a 1.1 GB maxtor of a 486 machine as my master and I notcied a big reduction in performance. Both in general, and specifically when I play games like UNREAL TOURNAMENT. Is this due to the 1.1 GB harddrive running on my machine? Or is it something else? What's wrong. Before this I ran UNREAL very smooth, and my system processing was faster.

Your thoughts?

The old 1GB drives are significantly slower than the drives of today. If you are running your OS, and making calls to the page file from that 1.1GB drive, you are going to take a MASSIVE hit to performance. Transfer rates and rotation are really going to hit you.

To say that you are losing a lot of performance is an understatement. Upgrading a system from a slow drive to a fast drive can make a very noticeable difference to the speed of your computer.....probably the biggest single jump in performance.

Until you get your 30GB drive back, you will be stuck with a slow system. Not much you can do about it.
