My dad decided he needed a new harddrive for an older computer we have. He went to Ubid.com and won an auction for a Quantum Fireball 20 gig drive. Last night it arrived and I immediately stuck it in the computer and booted up with the windows 98 install cd inside. The installation is going fine until it finishes formatting the drive. Then everything stops and it gives me a an error saying it cannot finish the format, there is an error on the harddrive. I pulled out my win98 boot disk and popped it in and rebooted the computer. I tried using Fdisk to create one large partition. It seemed to work, but I went back into the windows 98 installation and it told me it needed to format it again. I tried again, same error. I believe there must be something wrong with the drive, but it doesn't make sense. It seems as though it can be written to up until it is finishing the format, which is when I recieve this error.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Looks like the drive is going bad... you could get a diagnostic utility and test the drive with it.... did the seller give some warranty on the drive? if yeah.. then get it replaced... if no... then there is not much you can do.... sorry

I looked on Maxtor's site, but I can't find a diagnostic utility for Quantum drives. Can I use the Maxtor program, considering they are now the same company?
