Harddrive Prices

Since hard drive prices are going up and I am looking to build a desktop in the next few weeks, should I wait or just buy the drive right now? Or should I wait?

Eh, why would you wait ? Run over to BestBuy, and pick up 1TB for $65, or 2TB ('green') for $75.

looooool looking at prices right now. It feels like it's 2002 again. lmao

We have to admit though, we've been spoiled with the very low prices of hard drives. Like under 100 bucks for 1TB, really? That's just insane cheap when you think about it. I just wish I would have stocked up more while it was good. I have 3 1TB spares right now though so at least I will be fine if I get a few failures. I have a hot spare as well.

I never did buy a 2TB drive as my only raid array is all 1TB so I just kept growing it given the drives were so cheap.

Eh, no performance figures, old drive, newegg does not carry it any more. I would like to get the Sammy F3 since they are beast but damn the price has gone up

Its a freaking platter drive, do you really think the performance difference is so mind blowing? With SSD's being so fast, one could say all of the platter drives are old drives.

I agree. Aside from brand preference.. they are all about 2-3% within each others performance levels. I've bought, tested, and returned enough to figure that out pretty quickly.

Besides.. it's a $65 drive.. not a $365 drive. Big whoop if its 7MB/s slower than another model anyways.

There are places that are running out of supply, because everyone is stocking up. We're at the start of the issue. Prices may not go up, but supply may be spotty for another few weeks at least.

Actually you are right, I am going to go this weekend, hope they have some left.

Woah. What the hell. I never heard of this... Newegg prices are crazy, but my local Microcenter still has the "normal" prices. Should I just buy a bunch to resell? 😛

The prices right now are terrible.

I was planning on buying two new 2TB drives, but everywhere I look, the price is double what is was just a few weeks ago.

Think I'll just wait a bit and see if they don't come back down. It's not urgent for me anyway.

I think they will drop a little as people carm down. But only 10-20% of the current price.

Prices we had a few months ago are expected some time in 6 months when production returns to normal levels.

Not recommended. Unless you are a vendor (in which your livelihood depends on sales) stocking up on HDDs is not a bright idea. Buy them as replacements only when you need them as this technology moves so fast that even six months from now the new batches will, in all likelihood, be improved (eg, fewer platters - same space because of higher densities, less power consumption, faster access, quieter, etc.).

What specific models are you looking for that have went up 100% in a few weeks?

I haven't kept up on drive prices, but I still find 500gb drives for around $50 plus tax. Still seems like a fair price to me unless they were much less when I haven't been looking.
