Harddrive performance diff 8mb cache VS 2mb

Im just curious as seeing a bunch of the 8mb cache drives vs the 2mb drives what the diff would be. I mean I dont need the absolute top of the line. I just want a good drive. Im looking at some of the Samsung drives as Ive heard they are super quiet.
 
The only place I have a drive with 8 MB buffer is my laptop. It also has a 2 MB buffered drive - same rpm (5400) and same size. When cloning one to the other, when the 8 MB Toshiba is writing, it is faster by about 2 minutes for the whole job. There is an increase in performance, but I can't tell you a ratio or rate.
 
search "2mb" (recent and archived) for a bunch of opinions.

IMHO not much difference in real-world applications but worth $5.
 
I've found it to be a pretty subtle difference. When the 8MB drives first hit the market, people made it sound as though they would transform your machine - they won't. Still probably worthwhile if it is only slightly costlier.

When you've got PCs with no major differences but the HD, you can. But generally...no. Hence my buying a 2MB drive to save a bit of $.
 
For me, I went with a 2MB because the single platter Samsungs (which are supposed to be even quieter than the multi-platter drives) are 2MB.
