Harddrive Opinion

I want peoples opinions.
There are two harddrives I am looking at.
First a 250GB Maxtor 8M Cache 1 year warrenty -> After tax, shipping it comes to .57 per gig
Second a 200GB Seagate 8Meg Cache 5 year warrenty -> After tax and shipping comes to .60 per gig
No rebates or anything on anything, this is just plain ol' tax and shipping.

I've personally never had any HDs die on me, but I suppose there is a first time for everything.

So I'm trying to decide if the 5 year warrenty is worth 50 less gigs and roughly 10 extra dollars (price compared)

If I could get your opinions, I'd appreciate it.

There is a poll, and perhaps if you could post your reasoning, I'd appreciate it.
I'm getting a more space vs longer warrenty confliction :)

Seagate drives are generally quieter, as well. I'd go with the Seagate if 200GB is enough.

when wd gave 3 year warranties...i strictly bought WD because of that, if that drive dies in a year your going to kick yourself in the pinky....

Seagate, 200GB, 8Meg Cache, 5 Year Warrenty, 0.6 cents/gig

Piece of mind is worth losing 50GB and paying 0.03 cents more a gig.

It doesnt matter how long the warranty is, the drive will eventually die, and it will invariably be 3-14 days after the warranty expired.

In my mind the Warranty makes all the difference. Is 50 GB worth 4 years less warranty. Personally, I wouldn't think so.
I have had two separate maxtor drives go within months of their one year warranty expiring. So that tends to piss me off
alittle bit.

storagereview.com has a drive reliability survey. Go there, browse the results, notice which lines are good and which aren't.

I don't have any experience with maxtor or seagate's customer/technical support so I chose maxtor. The warranty is only useful if the service is good enough. If it dies a couple years from now, it may not be that fun to RMA it, depending on whether you have to pay for shipping w/insurance, etc.

I've had great experiences with WD, so that's the only company I can comment on in terms of the usefulness of a warranty.

What will you be using it for? Is it just an extra storage drive to fill with stuff, or are you actually going to be running OS and games and such on it?

[edit]
BTW, I've got a 20GB and a 30GB Maxtor drive, no idea what the warranties on either one were. One is 3-4 years old (I got it second hand) and the other is 3 years old.

My friend was looking at a 200gb seagate for 90 bucks after rebate with no tax or shipping, where are you buying yours from

Looks like the seagate family this belongs to is extremely reliable, and the maxtor one not so much. I have changed my opinion ... go for seagate.

Sorry, I was out of town this weekend. The seagate is from newegg I believe. But it's not 90 bucks. Where was that at?

FYI, I just RMA'ed an old Quantum SCSI drive thru Maxtor, and the turnaround was surprisingly quick. That said, I would definately go for the drive with the higher warranty.

I was faced with similar decision tonight as I needed new drive and I chose the 200 gig Seagate. 5 yr warranty was what sealed the deal for me.
