Harddrive noise?

I have a 80 gig sata seagate hd and i was wondering there was any way to quiet it down with out any majer changes?

My case came with rubber grommets in the drive cage. I'm not sure if that is what makes the so quiet, or just because they have FDB.

What noise, Seagates are very quiet drives.

Agreed, seagates are about as quiet as they get. I'll lay odds that what you are hearing is a vibration in your HD cage. I had a problem like this recently and realized that my removable HD cage was not seated properly.

At any rate just be glad you dont have a Raptor. Now THATS a noisy drive!

I had a noise/vibration problem with my Deskstar in my Shuttle. I put little rubber O-rings on the screws as washers, and mouted the hard drive. Noise is all but gone. (dont tighten too much though) Hope this works for you.

Raptor 74 isnt too bad, but it ain no seagate thats for sure. Lets talk about the WD 120GB SE drives. Now those were real noisy.

OP: All you can do is isolate the drive from the case in hopes to deaden the vibration.

Post-AAM litigation, SATA Seagates are shipped in "performance" mode and PATA Seagates are shipped in "quiet" mode. Decoupling will help with general vibrations but won't make the seeks any quieter.

I bought a WD120 8MB SE about 1.5yr ago. That thing was so loud and whiney that I couldn't stand it anymore and replaced it w/ a Maxtor 160Gb which claimed to have quiet technology on the box. More recent WD 120 HD's don't seem to have that problem, such as the HP Athlon 3000XP system I bought for the lil laday for $369 during Labor Day (first time I actually bought a prebuilt system).
