i had an 80gb special edition western digital drive in my computer before, windows stopped working and a lot of other stuff felt weird, so i bought a new one which is what i'm running now...but i'm still trying to get the data off my old drive. when i plug it in slaved off the new drive, it clicks as soon as it gets power, over and over...it sounds anything but good. the new drive works, this is what i'm posting off. when the old one is running as a slave, the bios hangs at "detecting ide drives...". i'm running an abit nf7-s, if that helps. i tried to run the old drive by itself, as the master, and the bios goes through and actually detects it most of the time, it then hangs at the raid utility that came on the motherboard. i let it sit at this screen all day once, and it made no progress. my drive is under warranty so i want to send it back to wd/newegg and get a new one, but i would like to get some data off it. do i have any chance? if so, what methods should i try?

also, if i do decide to rma it, do i send it to newegg or western digital? i need to file an rma claim beforehand, too...correct? and its safe to rma with all/most of my data still on it?

You're safe to RMA, but say goodbye to your data. If you really need to get your data off the drive, you can try to put the drive in a ziplock bag (w/ most of the air squeezed out) and freeze if fot 1-2 hours. That might let you set it as slave and boot to recover your critical data.

i know if i rma i'll lose my data, its just a lot of pictures/emails/music and stuff, it's not 100% critical but it'd be nice if i could recover it. i'm still looking around for options before i rma. thanks for your help, i may end up trying the freezer method.

When you plugged it in as the slave, did you make sure the jumper settings were correct on both drives, ie, master@master with slave, and slave@slave. WD drives have single master settings and cable select also, so if it's hanging in bios I'm guessing one of the jumper settings could be wrong. You could also try plugging the slave drive onto the other IDE channel, in place of your CD/DVD drive while you try and transfer over the data.

i tried the jumpers over and over, i'm sure they're correct. i also flipped around my ide cable and tried 2 others, i know i had the settings right. and like i said, the drive doesn't work as a master by itself. freezer time?

Quack?

This will work. Sounds like a thermal issue to me

I would freeze drive for 4-5 hours. should allow the drive to work properly for about 45 mins before it begins to knock/shut down.

just make sure all air is pushed out of the ziplock

Hey disable the RAID thing in the BIOS. And let your pc *hang*. It MAY boot up after 12hrs or so. I do this with my drive.

I have a drive and when I restart it takes the pc about 12hrs to boot. I can't get the data off the drive 'normally' either. I have to back up to my DVDRW. Takes about 6-12hrs to make a 4Gb burn as the drive is so dam 'knackkered'. The drive doesn't spin up consistently which is also the reason I can't just copy it straight across to my other drive :(

Good luck.

btw I am about to send my 2nd RMA for my WD Se 160Gb drive :(. The RMA drive atually is also dying on me so got to send back the 1st one then send this one back !

OH also the busted drive is on a PCI IDE controller. For the life of me it won't boot up when it is connected to my motherboard IDE controllers.... Strange.
