my harddrive is running somewhat weak or laggy and make squeaky noise when i log in or out of program, file or anything like that. The other day i turn the back power off and so i have to scan my registry and have a bad spot.Today i try to defragment the harddrive hoping to rid of the annoy squeaky noise but it said that windows cannot defrag this drive cause it contains error that must first be repaired. I dont have the win95disc and i erase all the help file too so i dont know what to do. also my cdrom is slave to my harddrive and they are both on the primary ide. would i load faster in game if i change the cdrom to sec master ide. if so how do i just change it in the bios and the pin on back of cdrom or do i have to reformat everything and start over. thanks in advance for your suggestion

Run scandisk first, do a thorough scan, and automatically fix errors. then you should be able to run the defrag prog.

I killed my Maxtor 40 gb today, same problems. I killed the defrag, it was taking too long, then my system was running laggy. I rebooted, and I got BSOD. tried reinstalling, then got squeaky sh!t from my drive, now my comp. won't boot with it in there.

be careful! beware of defrag
