Hard release date on LGA 1155 (Sandybridge)

I've heard that January 6th 2011 will be the release date but will availability be right away or still just "Q1"?

I'm in need of a new system pretty badly for a new game I'm playing, but I hesitate to buy a LGA 1156 or 1366 when LGA 1155 is so close.

Thoughts/suggestions?

It's very likely to launch at CES. Intel has a history of doing that, and SB clearly works so they can launch it when they want (any point in the volume ramp).

I don't know if I'd want to be the first one to build with it. I may wait till Feb-March, and see what the reviews are like (on both the chip and the boards).

I can just say SB will be 20% cheaper than i7 when the performance of them is equal.
Or I will say SB is 20% stronger than i7 when the price of them is the same.

I built an i7 on launch date back in 11.08 and it was flawless. I wouldn't worry about. Sure, there were a few learning things on the OC front, but that was a lot of fun to work through as it was brand-new. 🙂

It will be hard to resist this platform until the high-end SB release at the end of Q2/early Q3...

What CPU are you running?

What graphics are you running? Upgrading your graphics typically yields better results in games than CPU upgrades.

Anyone consider the price for the motherboard?
Motherboard costs should be the same as s1156 boards. Remember, overall the transition *ISN'T* that big. The GPU gets on-die, the clock gen comes off the mobo, but otherwise the mobo's are gonna be almost identical to P55 et al boards.
Personally, GA-P67A-UD4 is my board of choice, pending pricing info to match to a 2500K and 4GB of GSkill ECO (DDR3-1600/7@1.35v) mated to a GTX560.

I got my parts at Microcenter the weekend before Lynnfield launched on September 8, 2009. It was amazing to see Microcenter selling parts 2-3 days before the official launch. The hardest part was no reviews of any boards whatsoever. But considering how rock solid Gigabyte P965, P35 / P45 boards were for Intel overclocking, I just went with that and never looked back. Basically if you go with Gigabyte or Asus or EVGA, it's almost impossible to get a bad motherboard. Also, on launch date every single motherboard in the store had massive discounts too. I remember even seeing some MSI P55-CD53 boards for only $70 on launch date. 😀

Actually right now I would say an SSD is the best upgrade you can do if you are on a mech drive.

But SB will be fine at launch. I am just waiting for the enthusiast chips with no gpu on them.

You're gonna be waiting for nearly a year (from now) for s2011 then.

I doubt Intel will wait that long if the rumors of 8 core BD launching in Q2 hold true.
8 core BD is 4 modules. Until we see how well they perform against s1155, I wouldn't make any pro *or* con predictions. BD could be a flop and Intel delays further. Or it could kick Sandy's ass 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. Until we know, we don't know.

IIRC the "demo" of BD was just a video playing? Weak. Ruse? Misinformation? Best-it-could-do? Regardless, I don't think BD is what Intel is waiting on for s2011.

I don't think I'll be waiting for 2011 (the socket, not the year.) For anything I'm doing the 1155 will probably be fine, especially if the chip performance is as promised. If I ever have more than one VC, I'd never have more than two (and even that's unlikely.)

Nice build! Even though all the parts are still imaginary  The expected price points for all of these could make that system fantastic :thumbs up:

Yeah, that's how I'm starting to feel as well. I'm more excited about Sandy Bridge than I am about Bulldozer. One would think that there is going to be a performance penalty in having the "shared" cores that BD uses. I just think that AMD is playing catch-up whereas Intel is continuing to build upon their lead and dominating the market.

Its all about marketing. AMD and Nvidia do this all day long. If Intel has a 6 and 8 core SB-E chip waiting in the wings until BD comes out, then it really doesnt matter if BD beats the LGA1155 SB or not. Intel has had these CPUs out in the hands of testers for months now (unless all the leaked screenshots have been fake), and like many have said already, the SB architecture is ready for release anytime Intel feels like it.

Of course they can be trying to milk the X58 platform even more. But I do not understand why they would replace the P55 platform only after 18 months, while X58 will be close to 3 years by the time X68 (LGA2011) comes out.

I'm expecting those parts to cost $750 including a good heat sink, and to $250 back on my current parts. Could be worse. I'll use my current supporting gear, as the PSU and the rest are easily enough for them, having been purchased for a i7-920/GTX280 build that lasted a month before I had to sell.

X58 is a server platform, the same as s2011. Long validation times, long support times, and higher margins. Different needs, different delivery. Same reason for lower clocks and more cores on s1366 vs s1156.

I think low volume production is ready for sandy and Intel is just getting high volume techniques and equipment in place for a big launch.

looking forward more for S2011. I'll wait for that.
