Hard not is not working on PROMISE channel.. HELP

This has been frustrating me for about a week. I am using a WD 40 gig drive and Asus a7v mobo. All ide channels are set to auto in bios. The bios is recognizing the hdd as being on the promise channel, but it's not recognizing it as being a primary master.. I checked the jumper settings, and everything looks ok. The thing is, when I take the hdd off the promise channel, and put it on a regular ide channel, it boots fine to the os. Also, when its on promise, the system boots up with the boot options screen. It asks me to choose" Floppy or Scsi drive " If escape out of boot options screen, it says boot disk failure enter system disk. But if I choose scsi drive, it boots to the os normally. I am running a dual boot 98/2k pro system. Any advice is appreciated.

My guess is that your haven't properly set the boot device in the BIOS boot sequence page.

If so, the BIOS is still looking for a bootable HD in the standard IDE port.

Check the manuals for Promise and your board for proper identification of HD as boot device on the Promise controller.

Hope this helps!

drunkster... I have tried to set the boot device as hd in bios, but the thing is that it will not show up in the list...... The funny thing is that this setup has worked for 1.5 yrs, and all I did was a clean install of 98/2k dual boot. I'm thinking I must have changed something, in order for it not to work.

When booting off of a Promise channel, the BIOS generally considers it a third party controller (just like SCSI) and you need to assign that in the BIOS. (Tell it to boot to SCSI/Promise/3rd Party HDD controller) If that doesn't work, recheck your jumpers, I believe the WD's not only have a Master/Slave setting, but also a different position for "single" if it is the only drive on the chain. Hope that helps,

Nate
