Hard Lock

Ever since I bought a 6600GT my computer has not known stability.

I have not formatted my computer when I switched from my 9500 Pro to 6600GT.

I have tried multiple drivers to no avail.

I have a 350W Enermax PSU. I'd imagine this sadly is the culprit. I can't afford to buy a new PSU.

In the BIOS my rails are

+5V = 4.91V
+12V = 12.54V

It just locks hard at any random time. Requires a reset.

Help. :(

Does your 6600GT have a auxiliary power receptacle? I'd imagine it does. Your motherboard draws all its 12-volt power from a single wire, since it doesn't have an ATX12V receptacle, so if all the video card's 12V power also had to go through that wire to reach the video card, that would probably be Not Good.

That totally went over my head.

So short version is I need a new PSU to solve this situation?

1) Does your card have that receptacle?

2) Is a plug plugged into the receptacle?

If your memory is set to AUTO voltage, you might want to bump it to 2.7 volts in the BIOS as a fact-finding step and see if that stabilizes the system. If you need more details where to find that setting, let me know... off the top of my head I believe it's in Advanced > JumperFree Configuration.

If it doesn't, then you could test the power-supply theory by removing the spare hard drive and spare optical drive, and also by slowing down your CPU to the 100MHz bus speed to reduce its power appetite. If the system runs stable like that, then maybe it's time for a new PSU. Possible new PSU for you, 33 amps on 12V rail and a 24-pin main plug for forward compatibility (can use on 20-pin mobos like yours too).

No idea on amperage.

I've tried 2.7 volts on my memory previously to test stability. No effect. I tried upping my CPU voltage to 1.675 as well. No effect.

I just down clocked to 100mhz FSB & put memory voltage back to 2.7V. We'll see how this goes.

I'll take another tact here. Did you uninstall the ATI drivers before installing the new card (doubt it is the issue, never know though)? Did you swap or move anything else when installing the card? Could the psu power connection be loose or the plug bad (sometimes the connecters get pushed back inside the molex plug). I'd try another just to see. Of course, try one thing at a time.

Yes I uninstalled them.

Nothing was moved.

Power cord seems to be fine. :(

What are your system specs? mobo, ram, hd's, ect...

Have you tried resetting the CMOS?

And 6600GT's don't have a power connector, they draw all their juice from the mobo.

thats just the pci-e ones. I think the agp ones need power

Correct, AGP does.

My specs are in my 2nd post.

BTW: I have not crashed for 2 hrs @ 100mhz FSB.

Mine has been randomly locking up as well.... not overheating or anything either, because sometimes it crashes before even BOOTING to Windows!! But it's almost 5 years old.... probably the motherboard dying or something. Piece of crap.

Is it bad my Audiocodec is on the same IRQ as my USB controller?

I seem to have gained a lot of stability my downclocking my memory totally. I dropped the timing as low as posssible.

WMP still crashes anytime I open files...

I also am getting a lot of the following error in my logs:

The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was C0000005 from line 44 of d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Sounds like a powersupply issue.

Try this:
Disconnect your harddrive, downclock everything (memory, cpu, graphics card (if it's in the bios), etc). You should be able to boot into the bios without your harddrive. Disconnect any unnecessary fans. Disconnect the cd/dvd/floppy drive. Boot with 1 stick of RAM.

See how long you can last in your bios.

I've got a feeling it's your PSU that's a bit too weak. The enermax that mechBGon suggested might be a bit overkill, try looking for an Antec SmartPower 400W for ~$55.

So I took out a stick of RAM and reinstalled my Audigy 2 Value.

100% stable for a few days now.

Ugh.
