hard drives?

which manu's still make drives with a 3 year warranty? most seem to be 1 year now...

also, I was never clear on the 137 (was that it?) gb limit, is it the bios that restricts that? how can I find out if it'll support it? what do I do if it won't?

which hd would you get right now? I'm basically looking to get a 160gb 8mb cache 7200 rpm drive with a 3 year warranty, but I'm willing to change the size if it'll change the price a lot (or a little for more space).

thanks

the 137gb limit can be fixed with a bios update... what board are you using?

westerndigital SE oem drives are still 3 year (must be SE "special edition" and oem)

Not sure, but i think all of them are 1 year now.
about the 137gb limit that is the max amount of space that your computer can allocate per partition. If you want a partition more than 137 use a ata card to connect your hard drive to your mobo. (when i bought my wd 200gb it came with a ata card (3 yrs warranty too!))
and just pick the hard drive based on your preference

Again, i'm not sure about the 1 year part

(ok guy above answered it, i clicked on the "reply" button a little late, i think he did a better job

i just checked and it looks like ibm drives with the 8mb cache are also still 3 year

which is very cool cause the 180gxp drives are some of best harddrives you can buy (i know lots of people are still afraid of IBM because of the 75gxp and somewhat cause of the 60gxp. but the new 120gxp and 180gxp seem to be excellent drives)

just be aware that 180gxp drives come in both 2mb and 8mb cache versions so if you want 3 year warranty make sure its a 8mb cache drive

it's a KR7A-RAID motherboard.

how would I find out if it'd be okay? if it's not, how would I go about updating it?

im not sure if that board will need to be updated or not (thats right about the time boards started shipping with large harddrive support)

but either way its still a good idea to update the bios for your board (since it will have fixes for other bugs, etc)

here is a link where you can get the bios update and it will have directions also
http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/download/download_detail.php?pFILE_TYPE=Bios&pMAIN_TYPE=Motherboard&pTITLE_ON_SCREEN=KR7A-RAID&pSOCKET_TYPE=Socket+A

it has a bunch of bios updates listed... but you will just need the newest one (the newest bios includes all the fixes from all the previous bios updates)
