Hard drives disappearing from windows 8.1

Having issues recently with sata hard drives disappearing, generally after starting to download something. Most of the time a power cycle will bring them back, but they keep disappearing sometimes after a few days, most of the time after a few minutes. I don't have extra hardware to test. I do have 5 total hard drives, 2 IDE, 3 SATA. The ones that disappear are large media storage drives and they seem to disappear after I start downloading files to them. The others are generally not in use often except the drive with the OS obviously? I'm suspecting power supply issues, as it seems odd two drives would fail the same way at the same time. Any way I can test short of having spare hardware on hand? Don't want to buy a bunch of unneeded hardware.

If you suspect it's a power issue you should disconnect all drives save your primary OS drive and 1 storage drive at a time. Try getting them to both actively do something at once and see if the storage drive remains responsive.

Test the drives 1 by 1 in this fashion until you've found any bad drives, if none then start adding drives so OS + 2 storage drives at a time, repeat this process till you find the configuration that does not work.

I would also recommend getting a program like CrystalDiskInfo which reports on the health of the hard drive to see if maybe some of these drives have an abundance of errors or are just failing in general.
