Last night I was on the PC, answering some emails and surfin' the 'net. Nothing that I don't do everyday. All of a sudden my PC freezes, and nothing I do helps. After a few minutes of trying I shut her down manually. After about a minute wait I reboot, and I get that awful, gut wrenching feeling we get when the screen in front of you tells you that there are no hard drives and no OS. I gulp, then begin to panic. The loss of some valuable data is not a comforting feeling, and I haven't backed up in a while. I go into the BIOS and the drives aren't recognized. I shut her down again, and decide it's just a hiccup and go watch O'Reilly on The Factor. Come back, reboot, and the same result. Now, I'm sweating. I decide to open the case and look around. I unplug both hard drives from the power supply, and then replug. I reboot and all is well again! WTF?! And the PC is fine since. Dust? Bad karma? The good that comes from this is I did a complete backup so if she dies on me now I'll have a funeral without tears.
Anyone have anything mysterious like this happen before?
BTW, the PC is about 8 months new, a Dell Dimension 4600, running XP Pro. 1024MB RAM, and two hard drives: an 80GB Western Digital, and a 40GB WD. No issues or problems with the rig previously.
