Hard Drive Write Protected

I am trying to reformat a laptop hard drive..it's a 30 gig IBM Travelstar. Everytime I try to erase the current partitions it says it has a write protect feature and it won't let me continue. Is there anyway I can get it off or am I screwed?

Where did the drive come from and how are you trying to format / erase partitions?

I got the hard drive from ebay and I am using OSR-2 to format etc. I tried using the Windows XP starup disks as well but right at the end of the formatting it stalls because it is encrypted.

Try to run DBAN on it. It has several methods of erasing a hard drive which are quite effective.
