Hard Drive won't idle

Okay, might be a weird question but my hard drive will never idle. I constantly hear that scratching (reading) noise every other second and in between its completely silent.

I just installed windows media center and freshly install all the drivers. I did msconfig and the only thing that is runnning are windows components, not any programs I installed.

Are hard drives suppose to ever go idle wen your doing absolutely nothing? No scratching/reading noise?

sorry for newbie quest

It should, I know mine does. It just sits there and maybe occasionally reads something. When it makes that noise, does the HD activity light actively blink? If not, you might be hearing signs of the click of death....

I was recently haveing a similar problem, and found the constant disc access was eliminated by defraging the drive, I assume this was due to indexing not having to search as much, couldn't hurt to try 😀

Just turn off indexing, like I always do. It takes less than twice as long to search for anything with it off, than it did with it on, and it leaves your hard drive alone. Of course, I never search for anything, so keep that in mind.
