whats up guys

okay my Maxtor Diamond Max PLus 9 250 GB ATA/133 HDD went kaplooey..

i tried to boot and it gave me boot errors... when i booted up the machine it saw it in bios and the opening routines, however when i tried to format it, it said it couldnt access it... well i got fed up with the hard drive a few months back and have went the way of the laptop... now i have this hard drive sitting here and my dad could use one... i was wondering if anyone knew of a good utility program for maxtor's and if i could salvage the machine.... if so, could i use it with an external usb drive or not? i also dont have a disk drive if i were to put it on my old ass xp1500 machine if the enclosure was not an option...
