What is a better 40GB HD? Maxtor or Western Digital?

Maxtor does ATA133 so I am "swaying" towards them...the WD HD's dont do ATA133

Any thoughts would be helpful!

go to general hardware forum and you'll see another exact discussion

in conclusion go for a WD 8mb cache special ed if you got the dough

did i mention there are sales all over this week?

good luck bargain hunting

oh yeah get a 80gig... you'll run out of space in no time

if you want a 40 gig both brands are fine. they are both pretty terrible for cutting the warranty anyway

Another vote for WD Special Edition w/8mb cache, and another vote for 80gb. I thought 40 would be enough for my system a year ago, but it wasn't. In fact, I predict that this 80gb in my new computer will run out in a few months too.

Another vote for WD JB drives. Basically ATA133 does nothing for performance, but the 8MB of cache does, so go for the WD.

I just got one of these drives last week. It appears to perform very well for me. From my tests compared to the reviewers tests it looks like it is a bit faster in the read speed department that the WD800JB drives. Very quiet as well. Here is a link to my HDtach read test results on the drive.

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80 gig 8meg cache
link for Retail Kit
The retail kit also carries a 3 year warranty.

Get Seagate.....Tell me one guy who has complained about a Seagate drive....Incredibly quiet and great reliability....I hate WD and IBM coz. they cranked out on me and my data. Couldn't RMA those drives coz. the data on them are too valuable. Maybe once I become big in life , I can afford data recovery

Buy Seagate. I need my options to be worth more. Baby needs a new lawn and sprinkler system.

WD and Maxtor are both good in my experience, and I have heard good things about Seagate too. Just chiming in.

WD SE's seem to have the performance crown, maxtors pretty good too.... SG 'Cuda IV (esp the 40gb, like mine, 'cos its a single platter) are undesputed king for silence.

40gig not enough... I think people have forgotten you can uninstall programs & delete files you dont want anymore. Seriosuly, what the hell do you fill em up with, epic amounts of pr0n or something? I've never had my 40gb HDD more than half full, and atm its sitting on about 3gig used (reformatted a week ago).

I would hold off until Storage Review posta review on the new Maxtors DM+9 though. I have both the WD SE and the Maxtor. I personally prefer the Maxtor for speed.

I find Maxtor drives quieter than WD....both peform well, but I didn't notice a massive improvement in having the 8mb cache....I guess it depends on what you do.

i have the 80gb 8mb cache maxtor and its great.. i think the access times on the maxtors are faster than the WD and the transfer speed should be close. Access time is the only thing in reviews that the WD doesnt have going for it.

i love the maxtor but i think the WD is cheaper.. but ive had great luck with maxtor in the past and would recommend them over WD.
the maxtor is ata133 while the WD isnt but that doesnt really make any difference, i dont think either drive approach those speeds.
but it is nice to have your ata133 drive working with your 133 motherboard!

well I don't know about anyone else but I have a 80gig a 30gig and a 17gig both the 80 and 30 are right now totally full with TV Episodes and Music I know I could burn this off to CD but it hurts the convience of having 150+hours of tv at your fingure tips.

btw I have 2 120gigs on the way to add to my computer :D

Choose anything but Maxtor. All the drives I ever had from them, died on me. I still have every single HDD I ever had and all of them still work ? some are 15 years old. The only exception to this is Maxtor drives. I guess they just don't like me.

I'd lean to the WD 80 SE due to the 3 year warranty. Unless I'm mistaken, the other drives are only 1 year.

Maxtor Ultras have a 3 year warranty as well. As Pillage said, wait until the new reviews come out, Digit-Life has already done a comparison, and the 80GB platters do seem to help performance slightly.

Here's a link to Digit-Life's Maxtor 80GB platter review.

Keep in mind, the DM 9+ is only the 2MB version, the 6YXXXL0 model. It performs very closely to the WD JB drive in the test, if that's any indication of how the 8MB "Ultra" will perform we'll find out shortly.

I am running both brands...

System is running on a 60Gig Maxtor ATA100

Storage is a Western Digital 120Gig 8MB buffer

I love the WD drive and I am still using Maxtors in most machines I build.

Both will perform well, although if you're planning on storing large files, get the WD with an 8MB buffer...

Maxtor have not released their 8MB HDD in Australia so I am yet to see how they perform. Needless to say though, I am sure it would perform well.

As for the difference between ATA100 and ATA133... it is negligable.

data recovery is major rip off, why spend a fortune for someone taking advantage of your misfortune?
why not take time to back them up on CDR, it's not hard just a little work is all :) can save you life someday...I dont trust any HD no matter what brand, they are not made for backup purpose but for working on and a little impact can cause all data to be corrupted like you drop the computer on the floor.

i have both brands
the wd 40gb at 7200rpm is slightly slower than my maxtor 80gb 5400 rpm
i can the difference by the drive test that nero has and also unraring certain files
the model for the maxtor is 4d080h4 i dont know the wd
imo, both brands are good, but i like maxtor a little better

Yes, is there a problem with that? =P jk jk... seriously, about 40 of my 80GB HDD is filled with Video content, and that isn't much either. About 10GB are music. Abotu 10GB are programs. Another 10GB is downloads that I might use someday. (or not, but it's always assuring to know that I have a million demos to play when I'm bored)

Western Digital. Their R&D department is looking really nice. Their drives are also proven to last longer. Maxtors are . . kind of. teh suckage. . .
