Hard drive very slow when accessing "My Computer"...

Hey Guys,

My hard drive hangs big time when trying to open My Computer so I can see all my partitions. It takes about 10-15 seconds then gives me access to my partitions with NO performance reduction. I have noticed that during this pause there will be a click, then everything seems to work like normal. PLEASE HELP ME...

I have already started backing up all my junk. I am defragging like crazy, I guess I should plan on losing everything pretty soon right? I have a new x2 3800 Epox 9npa+Ultra Combo that was running flawlessly until now.

Thanks

Normally when that happens it means one of my hard drives I have connected to my system is no good. Perhaps try running a chkdsk on your hard drive.

if your cursor starts freezing up randomly and/or your hard drive read/write functions are slowed dramatically, your hard drive is probably about to die

Yeah, windows sucks, what can you do about it...... (you can't do anything really)

That happens to me all the time. No matter what system I'm on, or what hard drives are plugged in.

I think it has something to do with windows caching something, or trying to access something... but I couldn't tell you for sure.

Hey Guys,

No I don't have Sata drives... and my cursor doesn't freeze up. I know it's not Windows cuz I restored my C: drive with a TrueImage backup which is clean. I still have to run a checkdisk, but first I need to backup my junk. It just happens everytime I click on "my computer" to open up other drives... OH, and windows bootup is much longer than usual.

I will let you guys know ASAP. Thanks for the input!

Normally I would say don't worry,... especially if you have a disc in your optical drive? Usually it will take awhile to spin up and won't let you do anything until it does. Or, mapped network connections could do it or other types of slow drives.

But, in my experience the clicking noise is ALWAYS the sign of a bad drive. (I'm not talking here about the normal 'grinding' noise.) Which manufacturer is it... they usually have a utility you can DL , make a boot floppy, and run to check the drive. If it fails the test, RMA.

Edit, longer than normal bootup = bad.
Edit2, why did you say you were defragging ilke crazy? Back up your data first - that's your only priority. Defragging or other heavy head activity will only accelerate death.

WOAH, that was the weirdest thing. It seems as though it may have been a badly burned DVD that I left in my drive. I aborted a dvd burn and left the dvd in the drive, I never would have thought that would have had an effect like that. It scared the bejesus outta me. Especially after restoring my C: drive with an image, that was definitely not a good sign. Anyway, I took the DVD out and problem solved.

I feel like it was a close call, but not at all really... HAHA.
