Hard drive tools?

hey all,

i am trying to find a hard drive program that can scan my hard drives and tell me if there is anything wrong with it. I have backed up important stuff on my 2nd hard drive (trying to accumulate ~4 gigs before burning on a dvd) and I dont want the drive to crash any day.

i've tried google but couldnt come up with anything. Also tried searching the forums too. I am sure there are programs like memcheck(for memory) out there.. right?

Check the HDD manufacturer's website. I'm positive they will have what you are looking for.

hmm how do i find out what HD is in there? 😛 i know one is WDC (wester digital) and the other one is named IC35L0blahb lahblah. how do i find out the exact name w/out opening the computer? I tried running Belarc, Everest Home Edition, PC Wizard 2004 but they didnt give me the manufacturers name.

Right Click "My Computer, click properties/Hardware/device manager/disk drives... there it will tell you what drives are connected to your system 🙂

it tells me.. but it doesnt tell me the manufacturer, just (standard disk drives).. thanks!

OK... Reboot, hit Delete upon booting, look in bios as to hard drives,(first page), and see what bios detects. Delete will work with some systems, usually if you hit Pause on the keyboard, near the bottom of the first dos boot screen it will tell you to press** or whatever to get into bios. It surely should say in bios what you have tho.

Edit: don't change anything in bios tho while you are in there, just hit escape and cancel changes.

What OS are you running? The Western Digital diagnostics should see the other drive and tell you what brand it is. There are programs for windows that monitor the SMART information from the hard drive. This may give you some idea what state the drive is in. Spinrite is a program that can check a drive for errors, but can take a long time on a large drive.
