I have a new deal to add to the list. It's mostly just "warm", but doesn't involve rebates, so that could be hot for some people.

Samsung OEM 80GB 7200RPM IDE HD with three-year warrantee at Microcenter

Only 2MB cache, but Samsung drives (at least from what I've read about them on StorageReview.com), are supposed to be quite reliable. A real three-year warranty is getting to be a rarity these days too. The price is just shy of $1/GB, but $70 out-of-pocket sure beats some of the deals that cost $100+ up-front.

just got the wd 1200jb from circuit city, nice deal 🙂

they brought out the wrong (250gb) one at first.. i was sooo close to getting it, until they scanned the barcode to "release" the drive.. dang!

where is the $20 dollars rebate for the Office Depot Maxtor 80GB L01P080 ???
I can't find it. I can only find the $30 dollars rebate from their website. thanks

bish, could you please post model number? I'm at their site, but I can't find the rebate.

Thanks,
SK

Please shed some light on your purchase. Do you have a scan of your receipt. There is nothing on their site about the 160gb drives for $89.00. (Did they substitue the 160 for the 80gb because they were out of stock?)

Sorry bout that but is ended l12/31. I thought it went until Friday but just doublechecked my receipt and it ended yesterday. It appears it was a 4 day special.

In Dallas Fry's ad today...

Maxtor 250 GB 174.99 - 30MIR = 144.99
Hitachi 160 GB 138.99 - 60 MIR = 78.99

Both are 7200 RPM 8 meg cache drives (Maxtor is ATA133 and Hitachi is ATA100)...

prices should be good until 1/6/2004...

I am dismayed at the paltry one year warranty. IBM Drives used to be (or at least I thought) the most reliable. Why are there none listed here...is IBM out of the drive business?

Anyone know which drives have the best performance... I've burned out a lot over the years and I for one, am getting mighty tired with it...

Thoughts anyone?

Otherwise, thank you...nice thread.

I've praised them before and I'll praise em again...Maxtor drives all the way. I hear the IBM/Hitachi drives are quite good these days.

Items listed here are on special offer (usually with Rebates) ... BB/CC/CUSA/OD/OM/ST/etc don't stock IBM/Hitachi ... only NewEgg do ... (and occasionally Frys / Outpost) ...

But unfortunately at the moment I'm unable to access Fry's ads online ... (they come up blank - as does the menu on the left of the CC site) ... my laptop is in desperate need of a rebuild ... once I'm able to access Frys ads online, I'll start to include them ...

Thanks for the info. I just picked up the 160Gb Seagate at BestBuy for my quiet pc that I'm working on. The regular price for the hard drive was $159.99 instead of $169.99. In addition to the $50 MIR, a $20 BestBuy rebate also printed out making the AR price of the drive $89.99.
The BestBuy rebate only requires a copy of the UPC code.

HEADS UP!!

The upcoming WD 160gb at CUSA looks very nice, but I have a heads up for everyone. I just got back from there because I was going to prebuy it thinking that this will be a hot seller. Much to my dismay, all the 160gb drives they had were 2mb cache. I managed to find one 8mb model and was going to buy it, but the UPC code and model number is different so I bet it wouldn't qualify for the rebates.

I didn't think they were bothering with 2 meg models anymore.

Can anyone clear that up?

Yep, it's 2M cache

And the rebate won't work for the 8 meg model? That's what I was really wondering, I'm assuming no. I see now that I wasn't exactly clear.
