I have a max 120gb ata150 main hard drive connected serilell 2. Can I replace my 40gb with a 120gb sata 150 connected with a serial cable or do I have to get a ata150 and hook it up with a serilell 2? I want to run RAID.

Also what happened to the Hot Deals thread? Where is a place to go to find hot deals besides Anandtech? I can get this Maxtor sata150, 120gb, 7200rpm, 8mb for $99.00. I don't know if this is good, bad,or ugly!!

Thanks guys I'll check with Abit. I really meant to ask where are there similar Hot Deals Forums other than Anandtech.

You could probably do a software RAID, but certainly not off a card...at least not without an adaptor on the PATA drive.

But I don't understand.....you're saying you have one Maxtor ATA133 drive on a SATA adaptor and one SATA150 drive? ATA150 doesn't exist last I checked...

SATA's theortically bandwidth is 150. the next step of SATA is 300 .. i believe, if i read right.

SATA doesnt reach 150 nor does ATA133 read 133 .. doesn't even peak 66. it's just theortical numbers that impress people.

pretty sure you can't mix PATA and SATA in any kind of RAID setup. Not even sure why you would want to...you would have two drives running at different speeds and bandwidths which may just make the whole thing run like crap.

Grab another SATA drive and make that your setup.

you could...if you put a sata adapter on your pata drive...but it'd be slow, you ideally want the drives to match.

You can create a RAID array with a PATA & SATA drive combination. i.e. Promise SATA/IDE controller on the ASUS K8V Deluxe.

Source: HardOCP

"The RAID 0 array tests configured with the 128k block size (or 64k in the case of the VT8237 based RAID0 array) were a bit surprising to say the least. Out of all of the arrays, the mixed SATA/IDE array on the Promise controller had the best overall performance. As expected, the VT8237 SATA array had the highest read speed out of all the arrays, but the lowest write speed. All the arrays with the exception of the Promise based IDE array had sub 13ms RAT (Random Access Time) scores, with the IDE array coming in just under 15ms. The Achilles heel of the Promise controller seems to be the measured CPU utilization. Across the board, all Promise based arrays had a utilization hovering around 20% while the VT8237 array managed just under 14%. If you decide to go with a 128k RAID 0 array, I?d recommend using the Promise controller due to its higher than average write speed capabilities."

Just like Algere says, you CAN do it. I have a PATA/SATA RAID0 array setup on my K8T Neo FIS2R and it works just as well as 2 SATA drives

From what I have heard/read, you can combine PATA and SATA in RAID combination, but it depends on the motherboard. You are also limited by either the smaller drive or the slower speed (connection) or both.

I bow to HardOCP on this one. Still, like non-matching RAM sticks, putting together PATA and SATA may reduce performance (not on the HardOCP test, since they were probably using very high end hd's)

If you believe a PATA Maxtor 40 Gig'er & a Seagate 80GB SATA hard drive to be high end, then yea.

Although I've seen better (i.e. Raptor, SCSI, etc.).

I said ata 150 cause that is what the serilell 2 takes the ata 133 to, it makes it serial. But I haven't tested it yet so ata 133 it is. So I'm wondering if I buy a SATA 150 can I replace my second HD with it in a RAID 1 array (sorry I should have been more specific)? My main HD is the ata 133. My board or I should say chipset allows raid 1 or 0.

I assume the only way to get a promise controller I must have the ASUS E8V. Which I can't do.

I know I could get an identical ata 133 and make it serial with the adaptor but I was just hoping it would be faster if I went with a sata drive, especially if I made it my main HD.
