hard drive storage reliability

if anyone wants to help Storage Review out with their already large database for hard-drive reliability, you should! it will help us keep good tabs on how drives do reliability wise, being updated regularily!

I really think the people of these forums should participate, it's a good thing to know how reliable a drive is, especially when storing billions of bytes of your precious data!

will do! im the hard drive killing king! im running on 4 refurbs right now 😛 just broke open a refurb seagate the other day to add to my collection of open hard drives. the only drives i havent killed yet are a maxtor 30 gig (it's companion has been replaced twice), a 40 meg seagate in a 286, a 340 wd in a 486, and a 4xx meg in a p90 🙂 guess they dont make them like they used to? or maybe 24/7 pr0n dls dont help my current drives.

Damn, I'd love to help out, but I don't keep the kind of detailed info that they're looking for! Gawd, I purchased a WD Caviar in '97 or '98, but I don't know what quarter. It failed before the warranty was up, but I don't know at exactly what point. It's replacement puked after the warranty was over, but I don't remember specifics. I don't even remember if it was 2 or 3GB, let alone the model number!

Had a 1GB Quantum Fireball die under warrantee. The replacement is still running somewhere, though I can't even remember where! No idea what the model number was either. Had a recent Maxtor give me whining noise trouble, but I can't remember if it was 9 or 13.5GB or what model it was either. Hah! Let alone what year and quarter it was purchased in! My God, anybody that can answer all that stuff in that database must be pretty fastidious to keep all that info available. I really wish I could help, but I have pathetic records of that kind of stuff 😱

BTW, the Deskstar 75GXPs that I've installed all over the place during the first quarter of this year seem to be doing OK... so far! :Q
