Hard Drive sound?

Just wanting to confirm my guess here.

Computer running XP. While running a virus scan, or pretty much anything that gives the drive a little workout, I hear this noise.

Almost kinda sounds like that noise you hear in your car when you barely let off the brakes and begin to roll. Just not as loud of course. Also a mix of what sounds like a 3.5" floppy being read/written to. Not sure if this is just a loud drive, or if sounds like this mean the drive is on it's way out.

If you don't have a current back-up do it NOW. It could be dying. Then download diagnostic software from your HDD manufacturer and run some scans.

How old is it? You might want to think about replacing it.

In the good ole days, that sound was the drive seeking (or searching for) sector 0. Probably best to run the SeaTools long test to be sure everything is okay. If not that, then at least run a detailed/full Check Disk Scan (with error checking).

Fixing it for someone. It had a driver problem and viruses. Fixed the driver problems. And then during this virus scan I heard the sounds.

Hard drive checks out fine on both a quick and long test.

I see now, there is an svchost.exe process that is taking 90-100% CPU and causing a lot of disk access. I terminate it and of course it stops. But, it will start again after a reboot.
