I just reofrmatted my friend's hard drive and installed windows 98. When reformatting it showed the correct space (20 Gigs) but then after installing windows (which messed up because it couldn't find a .com file when loading so i had to install it again) it showed only 2 gigs. He had one hard drive (actually a partition) that was filled with system files but i reformatted that and that one was only like 2 gigs to begin with and that was what it was showing. I need help because i dont know how to make it show 20 gigs and if it even detects the last 18 gigs. He has only one hard drive and it is a compaq presario computer.

THANKS

OK normally Compaq format their drives into two partitions , usually a small partition around 1 or 2 gigs which usually houses the cab files and also their restore files for emergencies, the other partition is what you use for you operating system.

You need to fdisk if you want to reclaim all of your hard drive space into one partition .Fdisk

maybe i didn;t do something right but like i said when it was reformatting it was showing a reformatting of 20 gigs

I'm gonna go for the obvious here............

Did you type 'fdisk' from the 'C' Prompt? (Obviously with the correct boot disk in)

When you fdisked them did you by any chance answer no to the first question about large sector or something like that - if you answered no - there is your problem, go back and do it again.
