hard drive shock resistance?

I thought I'd ask in OT cause I need to know soon with any luck.. there is going to be people here tomorrow out front of our building working on the road (mainly on the pipes, underneath) and my boss was curious to know if there is anything we should do about possibly making life better for our servers during the construction... does anyone know the tolerances for electronic components, namely hard drives, and if they could withstand some shock and vibration during this construction? it shouldnt be a big deal, but it's very important the equipment stay running and we have to make SURE it does. does anyone have any kind of info on this at all? that'd be awesome if anyone knows or can dig up a document on this.. i've done some quick searching on Google and havent found anything really solid yet.. so hopefully someone can help 😉

thanks!!!

i think you should be fine. i think the drive mfr's are more concerned about the g forces of dropping the drive in shipping and installation.

How much vibration/impact, exactly are we talking about? As long as no one is taking a hammer to the server itself, you should probably be fine. Specific shock tolerances can be found on the websites of the manufacturer.

OK that's cool.. i figure we'll be fine too.. but I just wanted to see something somewhere that assured me of this. its actually kindof hard to find. i didn't have too much luck looking Fujitsu and Maxtor's sites about shock resistance of their drives though...

oh im sure youll be fine. i had my hdd in my hand and it was spinning up and i was twirling it around. i thought it was dead thats why i was doing this. but it worked fine afterwards. im sure youll be fine.

i would be more worried about them over loading a circuit and knocking out your building electricity
or just plain cutting the wires to your server room or something silly like that
