Hard Drive Repair

One of the pins on the hard drive controller board is broken. Would it work if I were to purchase the identical hard drive, and swap the controllers? Anyone have experience with this?

That should actualy work, as long as they have the same firmware.

Any clue how I could make that determination?

Check before purchasing the drive? Not likely since it would involve comparing any model identification numbers labeled on the drive to see if they match.

The basic model numbers line up - this much I know. As for revision numbers and other such information, I'll buy several spares and hope I get lucky.

How would this matter if he is removing the board that has all the firmware information? Or would the chip that translates the head reads (inside the drive case) have to match the firmware fo the controller board?
