every once in a while my secondary HDD likes to erase everything on itself after i restart my PC and i have no idea why... and other cases of this or resources to help prevent this? it's a 160 GB western digital

You can check your machines event logs for related errors and also might run the WD diagnostic utilities to check drive health.
