Runing Windows 7
Has CD rom and primary hard drive on a IDE cable. I also have a secondary drive on a SATA cable. Recently after a crash I could no longer get the SATA drive to work. The computer would hang on shutdown. You cant see the drive in Windows but you can see it in the Bios.

I swaped out the SATA drive with a new one and even tried another SATA slot on the motherboard but still cant see the drive in windows at all.

Any ideas where to go with this I think that the SATA driver might be corrupted but no idea how to fix that in Windows 7 as I am fairly new to that OS.

was there no disk that came with the sata drive, that had the drivers on it?
normally when you use the windows disk to set the drive up it gives you opportunity to load drivers from third party disk by pushing one of the "F" keys F6 I believe it was.
they was true for xp anyway I don't run win7, but I imagine its the same.

I would probably re-install the chipset drivers. What chipset is it? Can you see the controller in Device Manager?
if its still not showing up,
I think the next thing I would do is disconnect the IDE and install my OS on that sata drive, its probably faster than that IDE anyhow, and see if windows behaves correctly.

Look in the device manager. "diskmgmt.msc" in the run command line. See if it's recognized as a valid drive. If it's unformatted and unmounted, it will not show in Windows Explorer which will explain why the OS does not recognize it. I would also advice running a hardware diganostics on the SATA drive - Western Digital has one available on their website as a free downlaod. Not sure if it will work for other brands or not.

I can see the drive there but cant do anything with it.

"was there no disk that came with the sata drive, that had the drivers on it?"

The computer was restarted several times a few days ago because a fan was making noise and scared my son. He restarted it several times and it crashed. After the crash the drive dissapeared. Thought the drive was dead so bought a new one. Tried useing the disk that came with the new drive but their software hangs trying to install the seagate tools.
This is a secondary drive on SATA the primary is on the IDE cable with a DVD rom

"I would probably re-install the chipset drivers. What chipset is it?" GeForce 6100sm-m

"Can you see the controller in Device Manager?" Yes.

"if its still not showing up,

Trying to avoid a format but last resort.
