Hard drive question

Okay

This is a really stupid question.. but I just needed to answer it....

Do SATA and normal ATA drives use the same channells.. I know the physically connect to the mobo differntly.. but if you have a mobo with 2 IDE channels.. and 2x Serial ATA... can that hold 4 or 8 devices.. 4 for the 2 ide channels, and 4 for the 2x Serial ATA or just total of Four...

thanks!

Most SATA mobos have 2 IDE channels (up to 2 drives per channel), and a 2 SATA ports (one SATA drive per port). So that's 4 IDE and 2 SATA devices, for a total of 6.

So a stacked setup could be:

IDE Channel 1 Master: DVD Writer
IDE Channel 1 Slave: CD Writer

IDE Channel 1 Master: Storage ATA Hard Disk
IDE Channel 1 Slave: Storage ATA Hard Disk

SATA 1: System SATA Hard Disk
SATA 2: Storage SATA Hard Disk

You can also buy PCI controller cards to add additional IDE/SATA channels to your computer, if you need more drives.

They use separate channels. But I think you can only have 1 SATA device per port. So 2 IDE + 2 SATA = 4 IDE devices and 2 SATA devices.
