Hi,
I'm new here and desperate.
My friend and I built a computer a few years ago (probably 3) and everything worked great.
I bought a 120 GB Western Digital hard drive.
A bit down the road (probably 2 years ago), I bought a 250 GB Western Digital hard drive, which I split into 2 roughly equal partitions. I keep music, movies, all of that on this hard drive.
Something went wrong and the drive went out about a year ago. WD sent me a new one and everything was fine.
Flash forward to last week. I decided to replace the case. I didn't feel like the power supply I had was good enough and a clip on the case was broken.
I moved everything from one to the other.
Upon booting it up again, suddenly, my 250 GB hard drive, which my computer can still locate, cannot be read. Suddenly, there is no file system on there at all.
I panicked since I have a lot of music I bought from iTunes on there. I know, I should have backed it all up, but I didn't.
Now, I bought a program (the name escapes me right now) and it found all of my files. They are still there and can still be accessed. So working in halves, I am trying to move my music files from one of the partitions (roughly 80 GB) to my first hard drive.
I thought my problem was solved. But the program is able to find the files, but it seems that I lose connection to my C drive in the middle of every recovery attempt I have tried. Somehow my computer restarts and can't boot back up again.
I bought a new IDE cable today and it still does it. I also moved my drives from the primary IDE controller to the secondary one and it is still happening.
My thoughts on the subject:
A. The IDE controllers on my motherboard could be bad.
B. Both of my hard drives are in trouble. It seems that the 250GB one could be either replaced by WD or possibly even wiped and it might be fine. I can't do that until I back up my stuff though and I can't manage to access it long enough to be able to burn DVDs.
Any ideas? I'm stumped and frustrated.
I don't want to buy the wrong part cause I can't really afford to replace either part, but I could possibly manage to replace one of them.
Thanks in advance.
