A friend of mine gave me a 1.7gb western digital hard drive. When I boot it up and power is put to it it clicks and does not install. One time I got a message that it had some kind of child protect problem.

Where are you getting that message? Is the drive recognized in the BIOS?

I got that message once I havn't been in bios. Have you ever heard of that child protection thing. Could there be someting installed on that hd preventing it from starting up. When I re attach the original hard drive it works in its place.

Put it as Pri.Master (alone and check jumpers/cable orientation
Boot into the bios (push Delete or the recommended key)
Try to detect the drive in the bios (Autodetect or manually)
Save and reboot with a W98 startup disk
Fdisk and Format

Let us know.

If it clicks, it means its a bad drive. check out WD's website and see if you can RMA it. usually if you RMA it they send you a bigger dirve since they might not make yours anymore. :)
