Hard Drive Problem

There's something odd going on with my computer.

Everytime I delete files (not send to recycle bin), it does not free up any disk space. At least in Windows Explorer, as I delete big files and hit "refresh", the amount of free space stays the same. What's going on??

This is happening on my desktop as well as my laptop, and since I have similar software on both, it should not be a hardware problem. Any suggestions?
 
How are you deleting them without sending to the recycle bin? It sounds like they are still going there to me.

 
You can always bypass the recycle bin by selecting the file(s) and then pressing [shift]+[delete] to 'permanently' delete them.

Ah, I had forgotten about that.

 
Do you have the Norton Protected Recycle bin? If so, even Shift+Delete won't free up space - you need to right click the Recycle Bin, and clear the protected files.
 
I don't think its a problem, once you actually use that space, it will be over written by new data. When you delete stuff on the harddrive, it actaully still on there until its overwritten by new data.
 
That must be it! I was thinking about that too, but I couldnt find the files in the protected bin so I assumed that they were gone.

I happen to have Norton System Works installed on both machines.

If you have Norton Protected Recycle bin, just right click the icon, select properties

In the new window there is Norton Protection tab, u can uncheck enable protection so when u shift - delete it will automatically delete and free space. I seperated my 200 gig hd into C: D: E: (3 partitions) i just have C: (windows partition) with Norton protection. D: and E: are my games/music/video partitions so i dont need Norton protection.
 
hmm... i jus did a complete uninstall of Norton Systemworks... and the free space is still not showing up! now I'm really concerned... any more suggestions??

System Restore - it automatically saves data in the System Volume Information folder on the hard drive, which is normally hidden from view, unless you set Explorer to show hidden system folders.
 
did you hit refresh ?

I delete a Movie ISO file last night and it didn't show up right away but then after it showed up after I close my computer and reopend it.
