hard drive problem

Occasionally I will be using my computer and all of a sudden I hear a click and it seems as if my hard drive shut down. My screen freezes and I can't do anything except turn off my computer. The fans and everything seems to be still running too. When I boot up there is a message saying "The system has recovered from a serious error." After that the computer seems normal until it does it again. It's not very consistent and has been doing then from as short as a few hours to as long as a month. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

1st thing i'd do, download utility from hard drive manufacturer and check drive, most have some sort of app, check in the support sections of website.
If that came out ok, then try going in your power options, found in control panel, under power schemes, change power option for hard drive to never turn off.
Try that for a few days, if still doing it, try new ata cable for hard drive to motherboard.
That would be some of the easier things to try....if hardware problem.
If its software.....then that list could be much longer, and fustrating.
