Hi,

I have 2 computers. (1.) Which is Intel C 2.6 the other (2.) Intel P3 533 MHz. My 1st PC, has a 40GB hard drive. It's Windows 2000 Pro and it has FAT32 Installed. (yes, i know fat32 sucks). I dismantled my 2nd PC, because I'm tired of it and I'm going to sell it. It has a 20GB hard drive and I'm trying to put it on this computer as a 2nd Hard Drive. By the way, It's Windows XP Pro and NTFS. So, I opened up my 1st PC, took off the IDE cable and power supply to the 40GB hard drive and put in my 20GB one to see if it will work. I booted the PC and then I get a black screen like MS-DOS except you can't type anything. So i reboot and I go into the BIOS. The Hard drive is detected. I try all the possible jumper settings and nothing happens. What do you think is wrong? The hard drive is detected but Windows won't load?

Can someone help me?

You said you tried the jumper settings.

Try this:

-Make sure they are on the IDE cable correctly (master on the first connection and slave at the end).

-Set the jumper for your first drive to master, then the secondary drive as slave.

-If that doesn't work, try setting your secondary drive as cable select.

-If that still doesn't work, some drives do not work very well together. I had an Seagate drive that would only work with a Maxtor drive if the Seagate was the master and the Maxtor was the slave. Would not work any other way.

Good luck!

Different systems, different components? Did you say you plug your old 20Gb hd into the newer machine and try to boot from that?

Theres your problem. It was from a different system and is configured to start your old setup, not your new one. It must either be a slave to transfer your files, or it is time for a format.
