Hard drive problem

Hey everyone, I recently got a new computer and currently have a 120 gig WD 8mb 7200 rpm hard drive in it. Anyway I'm trying to hook up my old 80 gig 5400 rpm WD hard drive and for some reason my comp hangs at the boot saying Detecting IDE Drives and eventually reboots and repeats the process. Not sure whats a matter... i set the 120 to master w/ slave and the other hd to slave.

EDIT: I had the hard drive laying around for awhile (not in use)

Here some things that come to mind...

1: are you sure you don't have to play with motherboard jumpers? Check with the mobo vendor to get the manual if its not big box
2: are there any bent pins?
3: if the cable is rounded, but not made within the last 6 months, that could be a cause
4: it never hurts to check, check, check and recheck the jumpers
5: figure out your power comsumpton and make sure you arent over the powersupply's capacity

did you try cable select? so drives wont alway do well with the master/slave settings...

try just the 80 drive set as a master, see if it works alone. (assuming your 120 works alone)

What kind of computer is it? Did u build it yourself?

Boot up with no drives attached. Go into the bios and set all the ide devices to auto detect.

And if they are both connected on the same ide cable, one is master and the other slave. Or put cable select for both drives for newer mobos.

Athlon 2500+ barton, MSI k7n2 delta mobo, 512 geil ddr pc3200, ati radeon 9600 pro is my comps specs.

Going to try setting it to cable select now. I'll tell you how it goes!

is the slave hdd on the middle connector of the cable and the master on the end connector? a stupid question, but you'd be surprised how often people don't pay attention to that little detail.
