I am running Win XP Pro. For whatever reason my Maxter 60 gig hard drive (model 6Y060L0) makes a single click noise every once in a while. At first I thought it was a bad drive and had Maxter replace it. Now the new one does it. I am pretty sure it is a problem with windows xp. So after the new one started making this noise, I reformatted the drive again. The noise then stopped. After I installed my software and ran some window's updates.......the noise came back. As usual, it only happens once in a while. I need some advice here..........I am out of ideas

Does it only happen after your drive has not been active for a few minutes? IF so, it could be that your drive is going into stnadby mode and the noise happens when it is spinning bAck up to speed.

I don't think so.....becuase it happens randomly. Like I said before, it doesn't happen when I have just the OS loaded. When I start to load games and files, then this click noise happens every once in a while.

That may be a sign of some bad sectors, since I had an old Quantum Bigfoot drive that made that noise when trying to access certain sectors of the drive, and I found out that those sectors were no good. Might wanna run a surface scan on the drive just to check.

or that it's trying access certain areas of the disk that are locked off, say his drive has 2 x40GB plotters and the clicking noise occurs when he gets closer to the edge of the disk. If you dont get more info here you may want to consider reposting this in general hardware.

OS will not making your harddrive have clicking noise, but the harddware of your drive.
it really sound like your replace harddrive still have some error inside.
it may be a bad sector, because even a bad sector exist, the drive still good from the manufacture point, as long as they fit their bad sector error range.
May i suggest you can ask for replacement, different model and make sure heat is not a problem surronding your harddrive, speically if you have a hight rpm drive.
