i took my ibm 75 gxp hard drive back home from college and hooked it up as a slave drive to our home computer.

today it started making rhytmic scratching noises as if the head couldn't find any information.

the computer slowed to a crawl when trying to access the drive and said that the drive wasn't formatted.

i ran ibm's diagnostic software and it said that there was a bad sector on the drive and i have to format the drive

is there any way i can save some of my data? i don't want to lose my documents and my mp3s.

thanks

I guess you could try with something like drivecopy, or driveimage.

scratching? head crash! don't use the drive at all. u'll need the expertise of a data recovery company to completely recover your data

or just clicking like with normal seeks? in that case, don't hook up the drive until u are prepared to make an image/backup (or partial one) made (ie. try to access your drive as little as possible to prevent further damage)

powerquest's drivecopy would be best

u need a hard drive of similar capacity as the destination drive for the backup procedure

just follow the instructions to image the drive

note: u might have to use some other utility to mark the sectors bad, but drivecopy should be able to do it

I had a clients disk fail in 1998 and had some luck with a product called Tiramisu.
The drive was badly damaged, unreadable by most programs. I got some of their data
off of it, but not much.
Good luck.
