The way I see it is the prices never should have gone up to begin with. They claim a shortage on parts, but have you ever gone into a store and not been able to buy an HD because there were none?

It's all bullshit.

The hell you people need multiple terabytes for on a home computer, seriously?

I use them mostly to keep my RAID box working. It contains daily backups of my most important data (~100GB worth of data.)

1TB drives were cheap. Microcenter were selling them for $29.99 for a while, so I stocked up.

After the flooding, my local Microcenter had no (real sized) drives available. The only things that were left were 250GB and below, which is almost useless to most people these days.

And wtf @ seagate for dropping down to 1 year standard warranties. Le sigh (the 5 year warranty lets me sleep easy!).

They have to find a way to cut rma rate to below 100% and since they don't know how to fix the drives, reducing the warranty is the only viable option.

Video for my HTPC to play back. I've got 5 terabytes of storage space that's almost full, and I've got a readynas set up for when I can afford the additional 8 TB of storage space it will support. Get an HTPC and you'll see how much storage a person can use.

I've been watching HDD's for a couple months now. 250GB is around $79. Ouch. A year ago I got a 1 TB external for that price.

Even Seagate realizes their drives are shit.

Yeah... I thought that putting all of your data in "the cloud" was the cool thing to do now.

Unless you're an HD video editor, I can't think of a legit reason to need that much storage.

I bought a black 1TB drive and a green 1.5 just a couple of weeks before the flooding happened. Was rather happy about that.

One thing to consider is RAM prices are slowing inching up a bit. I've been buying enough RAM to max out all my computer and have a few gigs just in case. I think RAM has bottomed out and prices only have one way to go.

Hard drive prices aren't expected to come down to pre-flood levels this year. Things will get cheaper, and by the end of Q3 production should catch back up, but there's no rush by WD or Seagate to get into another bloody price war.
