Yes another poll. Tell me if there's anything that should be added on there. The criteria for the poll was 120 dollars or less and SATA interface.

Between those 3, I imagine I'd have to go with the Maxtor. It's the most up-to-date and whatnot, and the last review I read said that it was an excellent drive (i.e. better performance than the 7200.8 while being less expensive at the same time).

You'd have to be in a fairly unique situation for me to recommend a 36 gig raptor, especially if it's going to be your only drive.

Seagate.

I'm using the 300GB Seagate 7200.8 for storage, and it's been cool and quiet,

so I'd pick the 200GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7.

I'd definetely opt for the other two. The 36 raptor isn't worth the money and the lack of storage if it's gonna be your main hard drive. For mid range I would go for the larger storage. the 74gb is really the only raptor worth buying. Out of the other two, I'd say seagate. I've yet to have any problems with them. Maxtor I'm not sure about.

Will I really need more than 36 gigs? Exactly what will all this excess hard drive space be needed for? Undoubtedly in terms of performance the Raptor is up top but the only reason why nobody is willing to choose it is because of the $/gb.

If you really think you're only going to need 36 gigs, then go for it.

If you're going to have 170gigs empty on the 200 gig drives, then the raptor is the better deal.

(I know you're not really going to get 200gigs out of a "200gig" drive, but I'm too lazy to do a conversion to see how much you really get out of it)

The 36GB raptor doesn't perform as well as the 74GB one so its performance advantages aren't as drawning. The 7200RPM drives actually perform pretty close to it.

A little over a year ago all I had was a 40GB 7200 Drive. Then I decided to get a 74GB Raptor. I really liked having that much more space so I got a 200GB seagate. Before this I didn't really have a use for alot of space and didn't see why others needed so much. Now I have almost filled up my current storage and can totaly understand its benifits.

Either way the 200GB will perform close to the Raptor but give you 5x the space and will run cooler and MUCH quieter than the 36GB Raptor.

What are you going to be using the computer for? I didn't think I'd need much space either, but it fills up fast. Better to have too much than too little. And I think JBT is right, the 36 GB raptor doesn't perform as well as the 74 gig one (I forget where the review was at, it might have been AT's own, a search would probably tell). So it makes more sense to go for the space--at least, that's what I would do. Between the others, I'd go for the Seagate also.

Maxtor FTW!

I have 2 seagates, they run cool and quiet. When they run. Both of them randomly fail to be detected by the BIOS, causing a crash and reboot. I usually have to power off and turn it back on for them to come back. OTOH, I have had no problems however, with any of my Maxtors, and i have 5 of them in sizes from 30 to 60gb, and am soon to add a pair of SATA 250gb drives for my HTPC.
