Hard drive performance

I recently downloaded Sandra 2001 and was benchmarking my hard drive. It gave the index as 17535. The break down is

Buffered Read:38mb/s
Sequencial Read: 24mb/s
Random Read: 6mb/s
Buffered Write: 22mb/s
Sequencial Write: 26mb/s
Random Write: 8mb/s
Average Access Time: 8ms

I have a Maxtor UDMA 66 7200rpm hard drive on a VIA kx 133 with service pack 4.28. I need to know if this performance is usual for UDMA 66 hard drives. thank you for your response.

That sounds about like what I got in SiSoft. I actually think I got about 19,000, but that was when I had about nothing on the harddrive, so it was on the "faster end" of the drive. I should re-benchmark it now that it is half full. (I have the Maxtor DiamondPlus 45 7200RPM 30.7GB harddrive)

SiSoft is extremely inaccruate. I wouldn't trust any HD scores from this benchmark.

I/O mark and Winbench are way more dependable, but both have their flaws.

man my hard drive performance is on crack! i used a few benchmark progs and they all came out very similir i do abuot 4 or 5 for reading and writing.
this is kinda annoying considering i have pretty good hard drives
maxor dimandmax plus 7200 20 gig
imb deskstar 75gxp 45 gig
any tips :/. they both are on same ide channel but i didnt think it would hinder it that much

I downloaded winstone 99 and did test my hard rive and it says in the lisense agreement that i need to give my system summery every time i post any result. So here it is!!

AMD Athlon Slot A @ 600 Mhz
Impression 771 AS motherboard (VIA kx 133, Via 4in1 version 4.28)
Primary Master: Maxtor diamond max 7200 rpm, 20.4 GB
Primasry Salve: Seagate 13.2 GB, 5400 rpm
Secondary Master: Digital research 12x DVD drive
Secondary Slave: Prime peripherals 56x CD ROM
System Memory: 128+64 PNY 133 Mhz at CAS 3

Well I guess i mentioned everything I have!!! Anyway the result is
WinBench 99/Disk Access Time (Milliseconds) 10.5
WinBench 99/Disk CPU Utilization (Percent Used) 2.78
WinBench 99/Disk Playback/Bus😱verall (Thousand Bytes/Sec)5420

WinBench 99/Disk Playback/HE:MicroStation SE (Thousand Bytes/Sec)18200
WinBench 99/Disk Playback/HE😱verall (Thousand Bytes/Sec)14700
WinBench 99/Disk Playback/HE😛hotoshop 4.0 (Thousand Bytes/Sec) 9370
WinBench 99/Disk Playback/HE😛remiere 4.2 (Thousand Bytes/Sec) 19200
WinBench 99/Disk Playback/HE:Sound Forge 4.0 (Thousand Bytes/Sec)19300
WinBench 99/Disk Playback/HE:Visual C++ 5.0 (Thousand Bytes/Sec)9800
WinBench 99/Disk Playback/Removable Media (Thousand Bytes/Sec)5450
WinBench 99/Disk Transfer Rate:Beginning (Thousand Bytes/Sec)30400
WinBench 99/Disk Transfer Rate:End (Thousand Bytes/Sec) 28900

I wanted to know if someone can tell my how the results sound compared to theirs test on their machines. It will be grealty appreciated if you reply. Thank you in advance.

Well, I just installed a hard drive so I ran the test 3 times(BTW winbench, not winstone). This is one of the results (not much difference among the 3 results. I just got the one with the most number of black numbers since red numbers are lowest numbers and blue numbers are highest numbers):

Soyo SBA+III motherboard
Celeron 566MHz CPU
256MB PC133 RAM
3DFX Velocity 100 video card, 1024x768x16
IBM 75GXP 15GB 7200RPM hard drive
Creative Live! value sound card
Windows NT Server 4.0 SP6a

Business Disk Winmark (Thousand Bytes/Sec) 8500
Disk Playback/Bus😱verall (Thousand Bytes/Sec)8500
Disk Playback/HE:AVS/Express 3.4 (Thousand Bytes/Sec)21800
Disk Playback/HE:FrontPage 98 (Thousand Bytes/Sec) 89100
Disk Playback/HE:MicroStation SE (Thousand Bytes/Sec)28700
Disk Playback/HE😱verall (Thousand Bytes/Sec)22200
Disk Playback/HE😛hotoshop 4.0 (Thousand Bytes/Sec) 9290
Disk Playback/HE😛remiere 4.2 (Thousand Bytes/Sec) 19900
Disk Playback/HE:Sound Forge 4.0 (Thousand Bytes/Sec)36000
Disk Playback/HE:Visual C++ 5.0 (Thousand Bytes/Sec)25800

The only result that raises an eyebrow is FrontPage 98 where your result is very low compared to mine (or mine is very high compared to yours).

Forgot one detail of my system: The hard drive is ATA-100 but it's on a ATA-33 motherboard, so it's performance is limited to ATA-33.

I have a maxtor udma66 20gb drive on a mb that supports udma66, but i was wondering if there was somewhere i could go to make sure that it is. Is there a place that could tell you? Oh, and what about the ide settings in your bios, i see all these eide, eei or whatever, but which one is for what?
